Hello everyone, I’m finally back and ready for another cigar review. Today, I’m bringing you the wonderful new creation from the people over at Camacho cigars blended especially for musician and designer Matt Booth. The cigar, I am talking about is the Room 101 that has drawn quit the craze in the cigar world. If your interested in finding out more about Matt, here is the link to the Room 101 site. Before I get to the review, I would like to personally thank Matt for his service to this country while being in the United States Marine Corps.

CIGAR MAKE UP:

WRAPPER: Honduras

BINDER & FILLER: Honduras / Honduras, Dominican

Length/Ring: 6 X 60

Shape: Bertha

Strength: Medium

My Observations: Just outstanding and that is putting it mildly. This cigar is a true eye catcher and believe you me, you will immediately understand why I am saying this, once you get your hands on it. The cigar itself is an awesome dark rich chocolate color. The wrapper is made up of noticeable veins which blend perfectly with its makeup. On my finger touch inspection, I found no soft spots and no types of imperfections to speak of. Over all, just a wonderfully made cigar.

Cigar Label: This label truly seems to just scream out “Buy me!” With its black and silver colors, it is a true marketing success. ” Two thumbs up!”

Snip: I chose a hole punch for this smoking experience.

Pre-Draw: Smooth with a rich tobacco taste.

Flavors: The 1st third of this cigar consisted of a peppery blast right up front and then tamed down to a nice chocolate and earthy flavor. The 2nd third continued with the chocolate, earthy flavors, but was suddenly joined by a short hint of caramel nougat flavor. The last third seem continued with the chocolate and earthy flavors that lasted right through to the finish.

Draw: Smooth as can be.

Burn line: Slightly uneven but needed no touch ups.

Price: $9.50

Liked it: Yes

Recommend it: You know it.

Hint: Get your hands on it! This one is for real.

Over All

Hello folks, today I am reviewing one of the most sought after cigars for October 31, 2009, that being the “Boris.” This cigar was recently released by Pete Johnson of Tatuaje cigar company and is part of the “Monster” series line, which is only released on Halloween day. The “Boris” is supposed to be the “Frank” out of costume and I think Pete released it to give anyone who missed the “Frank” last year another chance to try it. I have not tried the “Frank” but have one sitting in my war chest since last year so this was sort of a treat for me.

Ok, a little history on how I was able to get my sticks: On the morning of October 31, 2009, I like everyone else, geared up for the release of the Monster series cigars. I learned at the beginning of October that the Regency Cigar Emporium in East Greenwich, RI was one of the only B&M’s in Rhode Island getting them. I was sort of relieved, because I frequent this shop often and have spent several dollars there so I figured that it would not be a problem to get a few for my review.

On October 31, 2009, at about 12:00 PM, my oldest brother “Eddie” contacted me and asked me to pick up two sticks for him because he was not able to make the event due to family obligations. I told my brother I didn’t think it would be a problem and headed off to buy them.Thirty five minutes later when I pulled into the parking lot, a smile ran across my face because I was very excited to buy my “Drac” and “Boris.” Once inside the establishment, I was quickly approached by one of the clerks and asked if I was here to buy the “Drac?” I immediately nodded my head and said “Yes, Sir I am.” The clerk then asked me if I wanted a “Boris too?” and I again nodded my head and quickly said “Yes, sir.” I then asked the clerk if I could have two of each and explained my older brothers situation. The clerk turned and said “Sorry, only one stick of each per customer. “One stick per customer” I said to myself, you have to be kidding me? I only asked for an extra two and it wasn’t like I was going to sell them on EBAY or Craigs list! I could not believe that he wouldn’t make an exception. In his defense though, rules are rules and I for one understand that concept, but I personally think he should have used common sense and let it slide. So with that, any hopes of scoring some sticks for my older brother was over.

A few minutes later, the clerk returned with my sticks and began to check me out. As I took out my wallet, I turned and looked at the gentleman to my left and noticed that he was buying a box of the “Boris” and a box of the Drac.” I then turned and looked at the clerk and handed him my money with a smug look on my face as I said to myself “One stick per customer huh.” With that I left and phoned “Eddie” and told him the bad news. I felt so bad that I offered him my sticks but he instantly refused and stated “Enjoy them little brother.” I wish I could have scored some for him and to tell you the truth it really stung my heart because I was unable to come through for him. Hey life goes on and yes, I know “It’s only a cigar” but it doesn’t make me feel any better.

CIGAR MAKE UP:

WRAPPER: Ecuadorian Sumatra Rosada

BINDER & FILLER: Nicaraguan / Nicaraguan

Length/Ring: 7 X 49

Shape: Churchill

Strength: Full

My Observations: I was not impressed with the look of this cigar and found the craftsmanship to be poor. The leaf wrapper was brittle and had several cosmetic problems through out the cigar. I was shocked to find this because most of the Tatuaje cigars that I have smoked in the past have always been rolled to perfection. Due to my findings, I could tell that this cigar fell through the cracks, which lead me to believe that this was a rush job. Hey it’s only my opinion but I can’t see any other reason on how this stick made it through quality control.Overall this stick was disastrous in the appearance department and I was deeply disappointed because of the price it fetched.

Cigar Label: White with black writing.

Snip & Pre-Draw & Toasting: I went with a hole punch.

The pre-draw was tight but manageable. It produced a peppery taste.

I chose matches for the toasting phase, which went well and now I was underway.

Flavors: The 1st third of this cigar consisted of a full blast of pepper that let you know you were in for a full body ride. The 2nd third saw the disappearance of pepper, and welcome in earth and spice. The last third continued with the earth, spice, and was then joined by a tea flavor.

Draw and burn line: The draw was perfect and the ash held itself throughout the 2nd third of the cigar. The only complaint I had in this department was the five re-lights I had to do.

Price? Approximately $15.00 (I think this varies from B&M to B&M around the country)

Drink of choice? Star Bucks Ice Coffee.

Smoke Time? Approximately two hours.

Liked it? Yes.

Recommend it? Yes, try it if you get the chance.

Hint? Age it, I would say.

Over All

Hello folks, time for another cigar review here at the World According to Stew. Today I am brining you the Cruzado, which has been on my list of cigars to try for quit some time. I have heard nothing but good things about it so I am expecting a great smoke. So with that said, lets find out shall we.

CIGAR MAKE UP:

WRAPPER: Nicaraguan

BINDER & FILLER: Nicaraguan / Dominican & Honduran

Length/Ring: 5 X 48

Shape: Robusto

Strength: Medium

My Observations: The wrapper is very oily which truly adds to the look to this medium brown colored leaf wrapper. On a closer inspection, I found the wrapper to have small none noticeable veins and the cigar itself was flawlessly rolled to perfection. On my finger touch inspection, I found no soft spots to speak of and I loved the pig tail cap.

Cigar Label: Awesome and well planned out! The label consists of gold, black, and silver, which will draw your attention to it the first time you lay your eyes on it.

Snip & Pre-Draw & Toasting: I went with a straight cut.

The pre-draw was a bit resistant and produced a small hint of chocolate.

The Toasting phase went well with the use of my double torch Rocky Patel lighter.

Flavors: The 1st third of this cigar consisted of chocolate, leather, and small hints of a peppery . The 2nd third continues with the chocolate and leather but the pepper seem to fade away quickly. The last third continues with the chocolate, leather and wood. Not bad overall but I was expecting a lot more from this smoke and felt that it fell far short of all the hype it received from other cigar reviewers.

Draw and burn line:

The draw wasa bit tight for my taste.

The burn was a bit jagged throughout the smoke but need no touch ups.

Price? Approximately $8.50

Drink of choice? Hot Coffee

Smoke Time? About an hour and half

Liked it? Yes, but I didn’t love it.

Recommend it? Yes, but as I stated before, “I thought it was going to be better smoke than I experienced.”

Hint? Maybe some time in the war chest will do wonders for this critter? We will have to see and report back at a later date.

Over All

Until Next Time

Stew

We are in the time period of life where the nights are becoming longer and the days are becoming shorter. A time for pumpkin patches and apple picking. A time for hot chocolate , sweatshirts, and hay rides. A time for children to dress up as ghosts and goblins and candy. A time for playing in the leaves and football games, MLB playoffs, NHL hockey, and the start of the NBA season. I love all these things but for a cigar smoker it almost means the end of outdoor smoking.

Now we all have options, and yes sitting at your local B&M on leather couches and a 70 inch screen TV is almost always inviting. This all sounds great to me but time restrictions now come into play. No longer can you just open your screen slider, sit in your favorite outdoor chair, and light up your favorite cigar as you once could. Now you must find the time to go to the B&M and if your married and have children lets face it, a very hard task to say the least. Now yes you can continue to smoke outside, but I personally hate cold fingers and the constant moving around just to get warm. The cold whistling against your body and the layers and layers of clothing that must be worn just to keep warm. Finally in these conditions and of course I am talking about late fall, do you really enjoy your cigar? or do you just inhale it to get back into the warmth?

In closing, as I sit back on my deck and ponder the days of summer, its warmth, its beauty, and its long warm nights. I think about the wonderful creatures who lurk in the day and also at night all for me to take in as I puff away on a favorite cigar. Please don’t get me wrong, I cherish each and every season but I truly love the summer because summer is a cigar smokers friend. So as I puff on my cigar and look into the crisp October sky, I quietly think to myself, “I can’t wait for next summer.”

What’s you take on the season change?

UNTIL NEXT TIME

Hello everyone, I hope all is going well in your neck of the woods. Today, I am bringing you a cigar which carries a big name that being Sir “Winston Churchill” so right up front, I am expecting big things from this stick. Hopefully you know who this person was and what he stood for. If you don’t please respond to your local library or better yet Google “Sir Winston Churchill” and find out because without him life could be very different as we know it. I personally have tons of respect for this man and what he stood for, I can only hope that this cigar captures just that “Excellence!” Lets find out.

CIGAR MAKE UP:

WRAPPER: Ecuadorian Sun Grown

BINDER & FILLER: Dominican / Nicaraguan, Dominican, Peru

Length/Ring: 5 1/4 X 52

Shape: Robusto

Strength: Medium

My Observations: This cigar consists of a medium brown leaf colored wrapper, which I found to be just an “OK” looking cigar. On a closer inspection, I found medium sized veins and a lopsided cap. On my finger touch inspection, I found some soft spots throughout the stick and am now wondering why Davidoff chose this cigar to represent the legendary leader of England. So far, I am not impressed.

Cigar Label: So far its about the only thing I like about this cigar. Its colors consist if red, maroon, and gold which blend in well together.

Snip: Straight cut.

Pre-Draw: Smooth.

Flavors: The 1st third of this cigar consisted of grass and wood and once again, I am truly disappointed. The 2nd third continued with the grass and wood and if it wasn’t for this review, I would have heaved it over my deck rail. The last third consisted of the same flavors and thats about all she wrote. Yup that’s all she wrote, what a bummer!

Draw: Smooth

Burn line: Jagged and needed to be re-lit several times.

Price? $13.50

Drink of choice? Coffee.

Smoke Time? Way to long for me folks! About an hour and half.

Liked it? No.

Recommend it? No.

Hint? Hey Davidoff take these off the shelves because the legendary leader who saved your country deserves better!

Over All

Hello everyone its time for another cigar review. Today I am bringing you the newest creation from Sam Leccia who is the creator of the beloved NUB cigar line. What is this new cigar you ask? Well its called the “Cain” and word has it that it will bring you to your knees if you don’t respect it. So with that said, I set out to find this beast called the “Cain” and after a few weeks located at the Regency in East Greenwich. So with the new “Cain” in my hand and with some jittery nerves, I sat on my back deck and lit it up. Now I did not eat a hearty dinner as advised by the clerk and wondered if I just set a date with my toilet? A mistake you ask? Lets find out.

CIGAR MAKE UP:

WRAPPER: Habano

BINDER & FILLER: Nicaraguan / Nicaraguan

Length/Ring: 6 X 60

Shape: Double Toro

Strength: Full

My Observations: Very cool and very inviting. I was amazed on how much the sheen on the leaf wrapper draws your attention to it. Now on further inspection, I was truly amazed on how it’s lovely veins blend right in with the makeup of this cigar, and trust me you too will fall in love with it at first glance. Yes, it is the newest and biggest crazy out there right now so I will admit right up front that it adds to the desire of this creature. Finally, I found no soft spots and the cap was place with true confidence.

Cigar Label: Love the colors of the label and the location chosen for it that being the foot of the cigar. The black gold and red colors just blend marvelously together and Sam has a winner on his hands in the appearance department. “Great Job Sam!”

Snip: I chose a straight cut.

Pre-Draw: Smooth and fine with hints of pepper.

Flavors: The 1st third of this cigar consisted of pepper right off the bat complimented by caramel, and a nutty flavor. Now there is power there so watch out if your new to the power cigar arena. Though the power will not set you over the edge it could make you light headed if its smoked to fast! The 2nd third changed course towards leather, nuts, and wood which truly satisfied me to say the least. The final third consisted of leather, wood, and nuts and overall, I loved everything about this cigar.

Draw: Smooth and wonderful

Burn line: Truly amazing for such a big cigar.

Price? I paid $9.50.

Drink of choice? Ice coffee.

Smoke Time? Two and half easily! Take time on this monster or you just might be taking some time talking to your toilet (lol).

Recommend it? Oh Yeah!

Hint? Though I did not find this creature to be the time bomb everyone raved about, watch out though because it’s not for the weak!

Over All

Until Next Time

Stew
